NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY: CLIMATE FRIENDLY,

OF MAN AND THE PLANET

See/Encom 2022

Around the 1800s/1820s, early 19th century, the planet was inhabited by about a billion people. In just over 200 years, it has multiplied by eight that number that the planet took 2 million years to reach since the discovery of the first hominid. Today, there are around 7.9 billion people on the globe (estimated current population).

These data show the size of the challenge that humanity will have to face to reduce CO2 emissions and at the same time provide the population, in a sustainable way, with drinking water, food, housing and... clean energy.

The latest reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the International Energy Agency are absolutely conclusive: man is primarily responsible for climate change across the planet and he needs to win this race against time to prevent the rise in temperature. exceed 1.5°C.

The path is in the “Energy Transition” to a low carbon economy, which means much more than merely changing the way electricity is produced, which is essential.

Nuclear technology presents itself as a strategic and partner in this process, contributing a lot in several areas. Some examples, in addition to energy generation, are the areas of food (irradiation), water (desalination and effluent treatment), waste treatment, industry (radioactive tracers), nuclear medicine (radioisotopes), research and others.

This is what the XIII SIEN/ENCOM will show in the XIII edition in 2022. The XIII SIEN/ENCOM also foresees topics involving the works of Angra 3 and the construction of new nuclear plants in Brazil (10 thousand KW in the Northeast and the fourth plant until 2031), in addition to aspects related to the Brazilian Nuclear Policy and Communication, a strategic tool to sensitize society about the benefits of nuclear technology.
