THE DEATH OF RODRIGO

Engineer at Cenpes/Petrobras

Graduated (2003) and PhD (2010) from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (2003) in Mechanical Engineering. He has been working since 2001 in the study of flows using numerical simulation, with application to porous media. He has been working at Petrobras since 2008, focusing on the development of algorithms and methods for the characterization of porous media and determination of petrophysical properties based on X-ray tomography images, numerical simulation and artificial intelligence.”

Title: "Digital Rock Applications"

Abstract: “Petroleum geoengineering studies traditionally use laboratory analysis of rocks to obtain petrophysical properties. These are accurate tests, but time-consuming and expensive. The main alternative to this route, which has gained extraordinary strength in recent years, is what is conventionally called Rocha Digital. Rocha Digital combines the acquisition of porous space images, by tomography or X-ray microtomography, with advanced mathematical techniques that allow the reconstruction of the pore space geometry. The application of fundamental equations allows the calculation of rock properties, such as porosity, permeability, relative permeability, capillary pressure, electrical and elastic properties. These techniques not only provide a deeper understanding of the physics of porous media, but can also be applied to side samples or gutter fragments, allowing the use of real-time results for decision making. The near future points to the use of Artificial Intelligence techniques to improve results.”
