President of Firjan


Graduated in engineering from the State University of Rio de Janeiro, he entered as an intern at Empresas Petróleo Ipiranga in 1968. He was responsible for the implementation and development of companies in the chemical and petrochemical area of Ipiranga. He was a member of the management of this group for almost 40 years until its sale in March 2007. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Empresas Petróleo Ipiranga. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Banco Sogeral S/A. (on the occasion of an association between Banque Société Genérale - Paris and Boa Esperança S/A) and SHV Brasil S/A. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Boa Esperança SA. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Arcelor Brasil S/A, of the National Development Bank – BNDES for almost 20 years, of NUCLEP and was a member of the Board of Directors of FINAME. He was President of the Brazilian Chemical Industry Association – ABIQUIM. It actively participated in the privatization process of Brazilian petrochemical companies, located in Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo, as well as, through Gouvêa Vieira Invest Ltda, of inorganic chemical and active ingredients companies in Camaçari, Bahia. He was Chairman of the Advisory Board of Scotiabank Brasil. He was a member of the Council for Economic and Social Development (CDES), an advisory body to the Presidency of the Republic. He has been president of the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro – FIRJAN, since 1995. At the head of the Firjan System, he holds the positions of president of the CIRJ, of the Regional Council of SENAI, and of Regional Director of SESI. He is President of the National Council of SESI. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and of the Board of Directors of Community Action in Brazil. He is a member of the Superior Council of FIOCRUZ and PUC (Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro). He has chaired the Deliberative Council of ONIP (National Organization of the Oil Industry) since 1999. He is Director of ACRJ (Rio de Janeiro Commercial Association). He is president of Comunitas and member of the Fiscal Council of AlfaSol, both civil society organizations founded by Ruth Cardoso. Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of QGN - Carbonor (Church & Dwight Group). He is the CEO of Gouvêa Vieira Invest Ltda (formerly Parnaso Empreendimentos e Participações Ltda). In May 2014, he assumed the presidency of the Advisory Board of SBM Offshore Brasil S/A, collaborating with its new international management in the repositioning and business strategy of the group in Brazil. Member of the Advisory Board of ABIFINA | Brazilian Association of Fine Chemicals, Biotechnology and their Specialties | And participated as Member of the Board of Directors from 1999 to 2001. Chairman of the Board of Directors of Greenpeople S/A - Indústria de Bebidas e Alimentos Saudáveis. Member of the Order of Rio Branco in the rank of officer; Knight of the French Legion of Honor and Officer of the Order of Merit of the French government. In May 2016, he was appointed President of the Brazilian Section of Legionaries of Honor, which brings together Brazilian citizens decorated with the Legion d'Honneur and the National Order of Merit. He is Honorary Consul of South Korea in Rio de Janeiro.
