Claudio Almeida was president of the Brazilian Association of Nuclear Energy (ABEN) from 2018 to 2019. He holds a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and a PhD in Nuclear Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1975. He joined the National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN) in 1976, where he was the licensing coordinator for the Angra 1 Nuclear Power Plant. He then spent 14 years at the Nuclear Safety Department of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. He returned to CNEN in Brazil in 1998, where he was involved in the licensing of the Angra 2 Nuclear Power Plant and in various advisory positions, including as advisor to the Director of Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety and advisor to the President of CNEN. He was coordinator of the Working Group in charge of preparing Brazil's National Reports for the Convention on Nuclear Safety. Claudio Almeida retired from CNEN in September 2014.
