Carlos Leipner is Director of Global Nuclear Energy Strategy, where he leads CATF's efforts to develop and implement a path to the safe and economic expanded use of nuclear energy globally to address climate change and support expanded access to energy. The ultimate goal is to develop a global nuclear fission ecosystem that can deliver hundreds of GWe per year to transform the energy sector and expand the application of nuclear technology beyond electricity generation to encompass other uses such as hydrogen and fuel production with zero carbon, industrial process heat, desalination, among others. Leipner has had a long professional career in the nuclear industry, with various technical and management positions in the United States, Sweden, Spain and Brazil, including Director of Research and Technology Strategy at Westinghouse Electric Co. He has served in recent years as Vice President of Westinghouse in the development of commercial nuclear businesses in North and South America, especially in the areas of operational reactor fleet maintenance, as well as the development of new nuclear power plants, including SMR technology. He also currently serves as vice president and member of the advisory board of ABDAN, the Brazilian nuclear industry association. He is a former member of the United States-Brazil Business Council (BUSBC), sponsored by the United States Chamber of Commerce, and former vice president of the Columbia-SC Section of the American Nuclear Society. He was also named to serve for two terms on the US-Mexico Energy Business Council (USMEBC) by the US Department of Energy. He also worked at the Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries (OCNI), which represents the nuclear sector in Canada. Carlos holds a bachelor's and master's degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Florida and an MBA (International Business) from the University of South Carolina.
